Playing Picasso

2022, oil on canvas, 70,8 x 78,7 in (180 x 200 cm)

Three men “playing the scene” of Picassos Painting Nus Masculins (Les trios âges de l’homme) which can also be found as a copy in this work, pinned to the wooden door underneath a b/w wood print of reptiles.

The scene was staged with three models at the artists studio. Proportions similar to Picassos painting subdivide the canvas; yet Picassos window behind the flute playing young man is a landscape painting here quoting the work “Manuel Antonio” (see section LANDSCAPES).

Besuch

(Visit)

2020, oil on canvas, 78,7 x 59 in (200 x 150 cm)

From the early 1990ies until the start of Covid 19 pandemic in 2019 the depicted scene would be a pretty “common” end of a night for gay men in Berlin. After party and before returning home, one’d easily make the acquaintance of a host - either on social media or at the street - who’d invite for sex at his home with others. Thus, the open door and the late arriving guest (Fausto’s self portrait) while the sex-party seems to be in full swing are as much part of the game as are the basic interior or the poorly lighted kitchen serving as playground.

a friends remark about this work (March 2021):

(In analogy to all those opulent depictions of ecclesiastical nudes full of relish - processions, crucifixions, a coronation or alike - your painting works for me as an heterosexual atheïst as well. Even being distanced from the works particular motivation there is this desire for the ability to be caught up in something similar. That has ii’s very own satisfaction. It’s like the reverential and feasting walk through an old church, but on your step out through the gate you wouldn’t drop a coin to the collection.)
